Sources and Methodology
Every cost figure on this site is sourced. Below is the master list, grouped by topic. Where multiple publishers disagree (national averages, state averages) we publish the range and cite all of them rather than picking one and presenting it as fact. If you find a figure on the site without a citation, email us and we will fix it immediately - this is our policy.
Our methodology
- We publish ranges, not point estimates, whenever sources diverge.
- We do not use licensed carrier-specific rate filings. We do not publish carrier-specific premium numbers.
- We do not use licensed J.D. Power customer satisfaction data.
- We do not use LexisNexis CLUE data.
- We do not rank "cheapest" or "best" insurers by name.
- We do not use AM Best's or NAIC's bulk data feeds; we link readers to their free consumer tools directly.
- Every cost figure carries source, URL, and access date per the page it appears on.
- We review and refresh every number quarterly. Next review: July 2026.
National averages
Four industry publishers produce the national average figures cited throughout this site. Access dated April 2026.
State averages
State-level averages are pulled from the same publishers above, read at the state-page level rather than the national aggregate.
Factor impacts
Each factor on /what-affects-your-premium and each estimator multiplier cites one of these sources.
Policy forms and exclusions
Coverage type pages reference ISO-standard forms via secondary sources, plus Policygenius' exclusion analysis.
Deductibles
Percentage deductible specifics for hurricane / named-storm / wind / hail / earthquake.
Flood insurance
NFIP is a federal programme; its data is fully public. Private flood context via insurance journalism.
Earthquake insurance
The California Earthquake Authority publishes its rate filings and premium calculator publicly.
Discounts and saving
Every tactic on /how-to-save cites one of these.
Regulators and quote aggregators
Links readers should visit for their own due diligence rather than trust a third-party's summary.
Correction policy and contact
If you believe any figure on this site is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the page URL, the specific figure, and a source that supports the correction. We review correction requests weekly and publish updates immediately when substantiated.
This site is not affiliated with any insurance carrier, broker, or agency. We do not sell leads. We do not capture email addresses via calculators or quote forms. Quote aggregator links in our pages are to publicly-available comparison tools (NerdWallet, Policygenius, The Zebra) that we do not endorse over carrier-direct shopping.
